TOEFL ESSAY [higher salary and preserving environment]

(2009.02.27) A job with lots of vacation is better than a job with higher salary, low free time.

 

    In modern society, it has been controversial whether a job with lots of vacation is better than a job with higher salary, low free time. However, I basically disagree with the given statement because people can stay away from financial difficulties and people care about their ego.

    Most of all, people can stay away from financial difficulties. As a matter of fact, with lacks of natural resources and geographic disadvantage, South Korea frequently faces economy inferiority. As South Korea had gone through the economic crisis, the unemployment rate has been continuously increasing so that three quarters of the youth population are suffering from having no jobs to support their livelihood. Therefore, having substantial amount of money is very important to survive in this society in South Korea. The phenomenon can be supported by many recent reports on the Ministry of Economy. In a recent survey, over 80 percent of workers in Korea responded that they are care more about financial wealth than leisure activities.

    In addition, people care about their ego. Since highly competitive with thousands of prominent figures that an individual must prevail over, people in the present days make tremendous efforts to be superior to others. Thus, having high salary is very important to keep their ego. For instance, the phenomenon can be supported by many resent report on the Ministry of Economy. In a recent survey, over 90 % of workers in Korea responded that they want to have high salary from their ego.

    To sum up, I strongly oppose the perspective that a job with lots of vacation is better than a job with higher salary, low free time. This is because people can stay away from financial difficulties and people care about their ego.

 

 

(2009.03.22) Government should focus more on preserving environment than developing economy.

    In modern society, it has been controversial whether government should focus more on preserving environment than developing economy. However, I basically agree with the given statement because there are serious air and water pollutions.

    Most of all, there are serious air pollutions. As a matter of fact, South Korea is one of the countries that experienced rapid development that drastically changed the county from the agricultural society to the industrialized one. Due to the industrialization, too much people drive their own cars as a result of air pollutions are more and more serious problems in our society. The phenomenon can be supported by many recent reports on the Ministry of Health. In a recent survey, over 80 % of people in Korean suffer from asthma because of air pollutions. Also people responded that they want to government to focus more on preserving environment than developing economy.

    In addition, there are serious water pollutions. Due to the industrialization, most of people buy mineral water to drink. Little people bought water to drink in ten years. But nowadays, 99 percent people must buy pure water to drink. A recent survey conducted by the national government proves that 98 % of Korean should spend 10 percent of their salary drinking water. They really want to reduce water pollutions by preserving environment.

    To sum up, I strongly support the perspective that government should focus more on preserving environment than developing economy. This is because there are serious air and water pollutions.
